Donburi is a staple dish of Japanese cuisine. The word donburi, sometimes shortened to "don", literally means "big bowl" in Japanese. To distinguish this dish from its container called "donburi bachi", it is sometimes called "donburi-mono" (literally "thing in a bowl").
It is filled with unsalted white rice and a filling of meat, vegetables and/or fish that have been simmered together in a sauce (mainly soy but also "mirin" and "dashi"). These ingredients are often cooked with eggs beaten into an omelette and thin slices of onion.
