These Japanese bowls (also called Oobachi, literally: large bowl), both hollow and flared, are a kind of mixture between the bowl and the plate. This allows you to use it for soups, Udons, Ramen, Sobas, ... But also for rice, vegetables and meat or fish dishes. They are much more practical than a plate to mix and keep the dish warm.
It is an indispensable and very practical element of the Japanese art of the table.
