Japanese lanterns or chōchin are suspended by a hook fixed on the top. In today's Japan, the plastic chōchin with light bulbs are produced as novelties, souvenirs, for matsuri and gatherings. The first mention of a chōchin dates back to 1085 and one can be found in an illustration from 1536.
