The tengu (天狗, "celestial dog") are considered as Shinto gods (kami) or as youkai (Japanese spirits). Although their name contains the word "dog" like the Chinese demon Tiāngǒu, the tengu are often depicted with bird and human characteristics. The oldest representations give it a bird's beak, but more recently it is the representations of the long-nosed tengus that are the most popular in Japan.
