Mont Saint-Michel is a granite rocky island with a circumference of approximately 960 metres, located east of the mouth of the Couesnon River in the Manche département of Normandy, and named after the Archangel Saint Michael. Before the year 709, it was known as "Mont Tombe". Throughout the Middle Ages, it was commonly known as "Mont Saint-Michel at the peril of the sea" (Mons Sancti Michaeli in periculo mari)
